Capel Peniel

A small Methodist chapel sitting quietly inland from Porthmadog, Capel Peniel is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than actively seek out - which is precisely what makes it worth the detour. Built in the 19th century, this modest white-walled building speaks volumes about Welsh nonconformist faith and the communities that sustained these chapels long before tourism became a thing.

The chapel itself is humble and unassuming - there's no grand architecture or theatrical stonework here. What you get instead is authenticity. Step inside and you'll find traditional pews, a simple pulpit, and the kind of interior that hasn't been mucked about with to death. It's the real article, not a museum piece pretending to be one.

This works best for history types and anyone interested in Welsh religious heritage. Families with young kids might find it a bit static after ten minutes. Allow half an hour maximum, including the walk around the building and a poke about outside.

The location is brilliant if you're based at any of the caravan parks around Porthmadog - Tyddyn Llwyn is closest at just over a mile away, while Black Rock Sands and Haven Greenacres are all within easy driving distance. It makes a natural stop on a half-day exploring the quieter corners of Gwynedd, particularly if you're heading towards Criccieth or looping back through the Porthmadog area.
