Captain's Coppice

Walk into Captain's Coppice and you're immediately wrapped in proper old-growth woodland - the kind where the canopy blocks out most of the sky and the ground is soft with decades of leaf litter. It's a small forest near Coalbrookdale, the sort of place locals know but visitors often miss entirely.

There's nothing flashy here. No visitor centre, no boardwalks, no interpretation panels. Just trees, paths winding through them, and the occasional glimpse of the surrounding Shropshire landscape. It works well for families with older kids who actually want to walk rather than complain, and for anyone after a bit of woodland peace without the crowds you'd get at a more famous spot. Expect to spend an hour to 90 minutes maximum - it's not enormous, but it's quality over quantity.

The real draw is how it slots into the Ironbridge area's heritage tourism. You're minutes from Coalbrookdale itself, so you could easily combine a morning walk here with an afternoon exploring the museums and gorge. It's also genuinely useful as a base if you're staying at Irongorge Camping just down the road - gives you somewhere to stretch your legs properly before heading back to camp.

Go when the light's decent and the paths are dry. Winter's bleak and muddy; spring and autumn are proper lovely. It's free, as far as anyone can tell, and there's no faffing about with opening hours - you just show up.
