Carding Mill Valley And Long Mynd

The valley floor at Carding Mill is the real draw here - a proper slice of Shropshire countryside that feels genuinely remote despite being minutes from Church Stretton. You get a stream running through, woodland on the slopes, and access to Long Mynd itself, which looms above like something from a hiking magazine cover.

It's walkers' territory, basically. The valley works as a gentle warm-up if you're planning to tackle the ridge walks across Long Mynd, or it's perfectly pleasant as a standalone half-day circuit if you can't face the steep bits. Kids will be fine splashing about in the stream for a bit, but they'll get bored quickly unless hiking is genuinely their thing. The path up through the valley to the ridge takes an hour or so and gets steeper as you go - nothing technical, but it's a proper climb.

Free to access, as far as I can tell. Come early on weekends because the car park fills. Spring's lovely when the woodland's coming alive, but summer weekends get rammed with families. Winter's actually my pick - quieter and the light hits differently on the ridgeline.

If you're camping at Small Batch Camp Site or Mountain Edge just down the road, this is an obvious morning sortie. It also sits nicely as a walk before or after exploring the rest of the Long Mynd trail network. The town itself has shops and cafes if you need supplies, but the valley's the star.
