Carlisle BMX Pump Track

The BMX pump track just outside Carlisle is where the local biking community actually hangs out, not where they pretend to for Instagram. It's a proper circuit of bermed corners and rollers designed so you don't need pedals to keep momentum going - you pump and flow, or you walk it if you're just watching the kids tear around.

You'll see everyone from absolute beginners on balance bikes through to teenagers who treat it like a skate park on wheels. The surface is solid, the design rewards technique over speed, and there's something satisfying about watching a seven-year-old nail their first lap without touching the pedals. Entry is free and it's open all hours, though obviously daylight hours make more sense unless you're bringing floodlights.

Allow a solid hour if your kids are new to it - there's a learning curve and they'll likely need a rest. Experienced riders can spend the afternoon here. It's the kind of place where you actually sit on a bench and chat to other parents rather than feel obliged to buy an expensive ice cream to justify your presence.

Stay at one of the nearby glamping pods at Thornfield or Pasturewood - both under six miles away - and you've got something genuinely useful for burning off energy on a wet day in Cumbria. Beats paying entry to yet another activity centre. Bring bikes, wear helmets, accept that scraped knees are part of the deal.
