Sillerea Wood

There's something properly restorative about walking into Sillerea Wood, especially when you've just rolled out of Carlisle. The forest sits close enough to make it a no-fuss afternoon trip, far enough away that it actually feels like you've gone somewhere. It's mixed woodland - the kind where you get proper shade, a decent network of footpaths that don't require navigation skills, and enough variation in terrain to keep things interesting without being knackering.

Walkers will get the most from this spot. There are trails of varying length threading through, and the forest is quiet enough that you won't feel like you're trudging through a theme park. Families with younger kids will manage fine on the easier paths, though it's not a playground substitute - they'll need to actually want to walk. History types won't find much to get excited about, unless you count the trees themselves.

Free access, naturally. You'll want a good couple of hours minimum to feel like you've done it justice, though you could dip in for an hour if you're tight on time. Early autumn's when it's genuinely pleasant - summer can get a bit humid and crowded. If you're staying at Pasturewood Holidays or Riverside Tourer Park nearby, this is an obvious morning or evening sortie before heading back to the glamping pod. It's the kind of walk that settles your head without demanding anything of you. Not dramatic, not Instagram-worthy, just solid.
