Red Wood

Red Wood is a working forest north of Carlisle where you can actually walk among proper timber plantation - it's the sort of place locals know about but tourists often miss. The trees are dense enough that even on a grey Cumbrian day it feels like you've stepped into something genuine, not a manicured country estate. You'll find forest tracks cutting through, and the walking is straightforward without being boring.

It's ideal for anyone who wants a proper forest walk without the tourist crowds of somewhere like Whinlatter. Families with kids aged six upwards will manage fine, though very small ones might struggle with the terrain after rain. The real appeal is the quietness - you're unlikely to bump into more than a handful of other visitors even at weekends.

Allow a couple of hours to really get a feel for it. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared. If you're staying at Pasturewood Holidays or Riverside Tourer Park nearby - both within 3 miles - this makes an excellent morning's outing before heading into Carlisle for lunch. It pairs well with the wider walking routes across the north Lakes and Solway Firth area.

The forest isn't a destination in itself, but it's exactly the sort of place that makes a park holiday feel less like being corralled into attractions and more like discovering your own corner of Cumbria. Go when it's dry, bring sensible boots, and don't expect anything other than trees, tracks, and a bit of peace.
