Redgill Wood

The woodland around Redgill, just outside Carlisle, is the sort of place you stumble into rather than plan for - and that's precisely what makes it worth a morning's exploration. It's proper forest, the kind with enough shade to keep things cool even on a warm day, and enough of a tangle of paths to feel genuinely lost for a bit, even though you're never far from civilisation.

Walkers will find the most value here. The terrain isn't dramatic - this isn't fell country - but the footpaths are decent and the woods themselves have that quiet, slightly wild quality that makes you feel genuinely away from things. Families with young kids will get a solid hour out of it before legs start flagging; older children who like exploring rough ground could happily spend two hours picking routes through the trees.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, which is refreshing. No visitor centre, no car park with a £2 fee, just woodland you can walk into. The nearest bit of infrastructure is Carlisle itself, only a few miles off, but honestly you won't need it - bring a flask and call it done.

If you're staying at one of the glamping spots nearby - Thornfield or Pasturewood are barely a couple of miles away - Redgill Wood works as a morning walk before a proper day out elsewhere. It won't change your life, but it's exactly the sort of accessible woodland that makes a park holiday actually feel like you've been somewhere real.
