Carnbee Reservoir

Three miles inland from the fishing port of Anstruther, this working reservoir sits quietly in rolling Fife countryside. Carnbee Reservoir draws a steady crowd of local anglers and dog walkers, though it's hardly the sort of place that makes it onto tourist postcards.

The water itself is fairly modest in size, surrounded by well-maintained paths that make for an easy hour's stroll. Birdwatchers do well here - I spotted herons, various duck species and plenty of smaller birds during my visit on a drizzly Tuesday morning. The surrounding farmland adds to the peaceful atmosphere, though don't expect dramatic Highland scenery.

Families staying at nearby parks like St Monans Holiday Park or Silverdyke Caravan Park will find it a decent spot for burning off energy, particularly if the coastal weather turns rough. The paths are pushchair-friendly and there's usually enough space for kids to run about safely.

Anglers seem to rate it for coarse fishing, though you'll need to check locally about permits. The lack of facilities means bringing your own refreshments, and parking is limited to roadside spaces near the access points.

It's a proper working reservoir rather than a beauty spot, so manage expectations accordingly. Pleasant enough for a gentle walk when staying in the area, but probably not worth a special journey unless you're after some quiet fishing time.
