Carreglefain

Getting to the top of Carreglefain takes proper effort, but that's rather the point. This peak sits above Pwllheli in Gwynedd, offering the kind of walk that rewards you with views across the Llyn Peninsula and out towards Cardigan Bay - the sort of vista that makes your legs hurt less once you're standing there.

The ascent itself is steep enough to get your heart going, and it's not a stroll you'll dash up in fifteen minutes. Allow a solid couple of hours for the round trip if you're reasonably fit, longer if you're bringing kids or taking it steady. The terrain is typical Welsh moorland - rocky underfoot, exposed when the weather turns, and absolutely glorious on a clear day when you can see for miles.

Walkers will find this genuinely worthwhile, especially anyone who likes bagging peaks without the full Snowdon circus. Families with confident young hikers will get something real out of it rather than a theme park ride. History buffs won't find castle ruins or Bronze Age circles here - just the landscape itself, which tells its own story.

There's no entrance fee or facilities at the summit, so you'll need to be self-sufficient with water and snacks. The nearest base for accommodation is Pwllheli, though if you're camping, Gyrn Ddu or Gimblet Rock are only a few miles away. Spring and early autumn are best - avoid it mid-summer when the moorland gets busy, or winter when visibility vanishes.
