Castell Cricieth

The ruins of Cricieth Castle sit on a rocky headland just above the town of Porthmadog, commanding views across Cardigan Bay that justify the short climb alone. Built in the 13th century and later reinforced by the English, it's a proper Welsh stronghold - the kind of place where you can almost hear the medieval arguments echoing off the stone.

You get a real sense of the castle's defensive position once you're up there. The two baileys are still distinct, and on a clear day the vista stretches for miles. It's not a reconstructed theme park version - these are genuine ruins, partial walls and towers where seabirds now nest instead of archers standing watch. The walk up takes maybe ten minutes from the car park, and the grass slopes mean it's manageable for families with older kids, though younger ones might find the loose ground tricky.

Admission appears to be free, which is refreshing. Allow an hour to properly explore and take in the views without rushing. This works brilliantly as part of a wider holiday in Gwynedd - Porthmadog itself has decent shops and cafes, and you're well-positioned for Black Rock Sands Touring Park or Glan-Y-Môr if you're staying locally. History enthusiasts will appreciate the medieval Welsh construction, though casual visitors might feel done in thirty minutes.

Best visited when the light's good and the wind's not trying to knock you sideways. Early morning beats afternoon crowds, and the surrounding coast is worth exploring while you're in the area.
