Castlett Pond

A proper little wetland tucked into the rolling Cotswolds landscape near Guiting Power, Castlett Pond rewards a quiet morning walk with the kind of wildlife spotting that keeps binoculars busy. It's a nature reserve - so no thrills, just genuine observation. You'll find dragonflies skimming the water in summer, various waterfowl using it as a stopping point, and the banks thick with reeds and marginal plants that attract everything from warblers to the occasional heron if you're lucky enough.

This isn't a destination that demands hours. An hour's amble around the edges is plenty for most visitors, though birdwatchers and photography types could happily lose an afternoon here, especially during migration seasons. The terrain is straightforward - boggy in places after rain, so wellies aren't a bad shout - but nothing that would trouble anyone with modest fitness.

It works brilliantly alongside a Cotswolds holiday, particularly if you're based at Bourton-on-the-Water Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, which is only 2.5 miles away. The pond makes an excellent mid-morning detour before heading into the honey-coloured villages for lunch, or a quieter alternative to the busier attractions in the area. Early morning is genuinely the best time - the light's better for photos, fewer people around, and the wildlife is actually active.

Children under ten might find it a bit slow unless they're already into nature spotting. Families with teenagers or adults who enjoy the slower pace of walking and watching will find it worth the small diversion.
