Cefn Bran

The walk up Cefn Bran takes you 541 metres above the quiet farming landscape around Llanfyllin, which honestly feels higher than the height suggests when you're huffing up the steeper bits. The summit rewards you with views that sweep across Mid Wales - on a clear day you can see for miles, proper expansive stuff that makes the climb worth every step.

It's the kind of peak that appeals to walkers rather than casual strollers. The terrain is straightforward enough - moorland and grassland mostly - but it's not a gentle amble. Allow a good two hours from start to finish. Families with older kids who don't mind a proper push will enjoy it; younger ones might find it tedious without the right bribery.

You'll find it dotted with a few stones and markers at the top, though nothing architectural to speak of. The appeal is entirely in the walking and the views. Weather matters hugely here - turn up on a grey, damp day and you've basically paid the effort price for clouds. Time it for decent visibility.

Fir View Tan Y Ffridd is a touch further out but equally well-placed for exploring the area's walking routes.
