Foel Fawr

The walk up Foel Fawr rewards you with views across Mid Wales that stretch for miles on a clear day. It's a proper hill rather than a mountain - 658 metres - which means it's achievable for most people without needing mountaineering skills, though the final push to the summit is steep enough to get your heart rate up.

The peak itself is bare moorland, which is part of its appeal. No crowds, no visitor centre, no gift shop. You get the landscape raw. On a decent afternoon you can see right across to the Brecon Beacons. The route from Llanfyllin is straightforward enough, and once you're up there, the wind often picks up - bring a proper jacket even if the base feels mild.

This is walker territory, pure and simple. Families with older kids will manage it fine, but younger children might find the ascent dull and the exposed top a bit bleak. If you're camping at Red Kite Touring Park or Clywedog Riverside just outside Llanfyllin, it's worth the detour for a morning or early afternoon sortie. Allow a good two hours up and down, maybe longer if you're not a quick mover.

There's no charge, no facilities on the hill itself - you'll want to sort water and snacks before you leave town. Go in the morning if possible. Afternoon clouds roll in fast here, and you'll miss the view entirely if you're unlucky with timing. It's not complicated, but it demands respect for the weather.
