Chempshill Coppice

Walking into Chempshill Coppice feels like stepping into proper woodland the way it should be - dense, quiet, and genuinely wild. This patch of forest sits just outside Bridgnorth and offers a genuine escape from the usual manicured country park experience. The trees here are old enough to have character, the undergrowth thick enough to make you feel properly away from things.

It's a walker's spot, really. There are decent paths through the coppice if you know where you're going, and the canopy does that lovely thing where it blocks out most of the sky. On a clear day you get shafts of light through the leaves; on a grey Shropshire afternoon it's moody and atmospheric. Allow a couple of hours to wander without rushing, though you could do a shorter loop in 45 minutes if you're just passing through.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Stanmore Hall is closest, just 1.8 miles away - this makes a proper morning walk before breakfast. The coppice isn't a destination that'll keep teenagers entertained for hours, but families who like actual woodland rambling rather than visitor centre tea rooms will find it worthwhile. There's something refreshing about a forest that doesn't feel like it's been designed for your pleasure.

Best visited when the ground isn't waterlogged, so spring or early autumn work well. Take a decent map or phone GPS because the paths can be confusing if you're not paying attention.
