Bridgnorth

Two halves of a medieval market town split by the River Severn, connected by one of Britain's steepest cliff railways. High Town perches on red sandstone cliffs 100 feet above the water, while Low Town huddles by the riverside - and the views from High Rock across the Severn Valley are absolutely cracking.

Bridgnorth Castle ruins crown the clifftop, all that remains after Parliament ordered its destruction in 1646. The funicular railway still clatters between levels every few minutes, though locals often prefer the zigzag footpath for the exercise. Theatre on the Steps puts on proper community productions, while The Arty Space showcases local talent in a converted Georgian building.

Down in Low Town, steam trains from the Severn Valley Railway chuff into Bridgnorth station throughout summer. It's the northern terminus of one of Britain's finest heritage lines, running 16 miles south to Kidderminster through gorgeous countryside. The riverside feels quieter midweek, perfect for watching narrowboats negotiate the lock.

Stanmore Country Park spreads across 70 acres just outside town, with waymarked trails through ancient woodland and open meadows. Chelmarsh Reservoir lies a few miles south, popular with anglers and birdwatchers alike. The surrounding Shropshire Hills offer endless walking possibilities.

The town sits 20 miles south of Telford on the A458, with regular bus connections to Wolverhampton and Kidderminster. Staying at nearby parks like Stanmore Hall or Bank Farm Holiday Park puts you within easy reach of both the Severn Valley Railway and the stunning countryside that makes this corner of Shropshire so special.
