CHILTERNS NATURE - CHINNOR CHALK PITS

The old chalk workings at Chinnor cut deep into the Chilterns landscape - proper dramatic for what's essentially a disused quarry. White cliffs rise up around you, with woodland creeping back in where the diggers stopped decades ago. It's the kind of place that makes you realise how the hills got their character in the first place.

You get a real sense of geological time here. The exposed chalk faces tell the story of what lies beneath all those beech woods and rolling fields. Walkers find it worthwhile, especially those keen on industrial heritage and how the land was shaped. The site's free to wander, though you'll need to watch your footing on the paths - it's sloped and can be muddy after rain.

Allow a solid hour if you're taking photos and poking around. Kids might find it interesting for half that time, depending on their age. The quarry itself doesn't scream 'theme park' but it's brilliant for anyone who wants to understand the Chilterns beyond the surface.

If you're basing yourself at Home Farm Camping or Bella Vista, both within a couple of miles, this makes a straightforward morning walk. It pairs well with other Chilterns exploring - High Wycombe's only a few miles north if you need lunch or supplies. Worth the detour if geology matters to you, less essential if you're after chocolate box views.
