Beacon Hill

The walk up through beech woodland gives no hint of what awaits at the summit. Beacon Hill sits 267 metres above sea level in the Chiltern Hills, offering one of the finest viewpoints in south Buckinghamshire without the crowds you'll find elsewhere.

From the top, the views stretch across the Vale of Aylesbury on a clear day, with High Wycombe sprawling in the valley below. It's a proper hill walk rather than a gentle stroll - expect a good 45-minute climb from the nearest parking spots in the lanes around Penn Street. The paths can get muddy after rain, so decent boots are essential.

Families with older children will enjoy the challenge, though it's probably too steep for pushchairs or very young ones. The reward at the top makes it well worth the effort, especially on crisp winter days when the air is clear.

Being National Trust land, access is free and the hill is open year-round. Allow two hours for the round trip if you want time to appreciate the views properly. It pairs brilliantly with a stay at nearby sites like Orchard View Farm Camping or Home Farm Camping - both within easy driving distance and perfect for exploring the wider Chilterns area on foot.
