Churchfield Wood

The beech and oak trees at Churchfield Wood stand thick enough to block out most of the sky, which is exactly what you want on a muggy summer afternoon. It's a proper woodland walk just outside High Wycombe - the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think instead of traffic noise.

There's nothing flashy here. No visitor centre, no marked trails with interpretive boards. Just trees, paths, and the occasional glimpse of the Chilterns rolling away beyond the canopy. You're looking at a couple of hours maximum if you stick to the main routes, though it's easy enough to spend longer pottering about if you're in no rush. Families with younger kids will manage fine on the easier sections; older walkers might find themselves wanting a bit more challenge, but there's enough cover and variety to keep most people engaged.

As a break from caravan life at somewhere like Chiltern Retreat Rural Camping or White Mark Glamping - both within a few miles - it works well. Bit of fresh air, stretch your legs, back for lunch. The wood's free to access, though you'll want decent footwear after rain as it gets boggy in places.

Worth a morning visit if you're based in the area, though I wouldn't drive hours for it. There are better woodland walks in the Chilterns if you're willing to push a bit further out from High Wycombe. Still, as local knowledge goes, this is solid.
