ClayWay Foot Crossing

The ClayWay Foot Crossing sits just outside Ely, a modest footbridge that speaks more of local history than Instagram appeal. It's the sort of place you'd stumble upon while walking the fens rather than deliberately plan a morning around, but that's rather the point - it marks an old route across what was once impassable wetland, a genuine piece of how people actually moved through Cambridgeshire when most of it was water and bog.

What you get is a straightforward crossing and a bit of landscape context. The bridge itself isn't architecturally showy, but standing here gives you a real sense of the fens as a navigational puzzle that our ancestors had to solve. It's the kind of thing history-minded walkers and anyone interested in how the landscape was engineered will appreciate far more than casual visitors expecting a viewpoint or café.

There's no admission charge and no formal facilities - this is raw countryside. Allow 20 minutes if you're passing through, longer if you're combining it with a proper fenland walk. Spring and early summer are best when the wetland comes alive with bird life and wildflowers.

If you're staying at Hatters Meadows, barely a mile away, or the equally well-reviewed Heatherbield Lodge, it makes a decent leg-stretcher between park life and Ely proper. Don't expect attractions - expect solitude and the particular quality of light you only get on flat, open water.
