Cliffe Wood

Walk into Cliffe Wood and you're straight into proper woodland - the sort of place where the noise from Stoke-on-Trent actually fades away. It's a modest forest rather than a sprawling estate, but that's rather the point. You get tree-lined paths, a bit of shade, and enough of a network that you won't feel hemmed in after twenty minutes.

The wood works best for walkers after a campsite breakfast. Nothing too strenuous - the paths are reasonable underfoot and you can knock out a circuit in an hour or so, or take it slower if you're with kids who like poking about in undergrowth. It's the sort of place that fills a morning without demanding your whole day. Bring decent footwear though, especially after rain.

This isn't a destination on its own, but it's a solid option if you're camped at Rudyard Vale Caravan Park just down the road, or any of the other sites within a few miles. The area around Stoke-on-Trent can feel industrial, so Cliffe Wood offers genuine relief from that. Free to access, no visitor centre nonsense, just actual woodland. It's useful. Not dramatic, not Instagram-worthy, but exactly what you need when you want a proper walk without leaving the region.
