Coastal Zone

The Coastal Zone sits right on Portrush's seafront and is genuinely free to wander through - a rarity these days. It's basically an outdoor exhibition space celebrating the geology and ecology of the Causeway Coast, with interpretation panels dotted about explaining what you're actually looking at when you gaze out across those famous basalt cliffs.

You won't spend hours here. Walk round properly and allow 30-45 minutes, maybe an hour if you're into the science bit. The real draw is understanding why this coastline looks the way it does - the volcanic history, the columnar basalt formations, how the sea's carved everything into those dramatic shapes. Kids aged 8 and up will find the panels engaging rather than tedious, but younger children will probably get restless unless they're keen rock spotters.

The location itself does most of the heavy lifting. Standing here you're looking directly at the geological story, not just reading about it in a museum. On a clear day the views are proper striking, and you can see across to Scotland. Worst time to visit is when it's lashing rain - the panels are weatherproof but you won't want to linger.

If you're basing yourself at Causeway Country Pods nearby, this works as a quick educational stop before or after hitting the Giant's Causeway itself. Bushmills is only a short drive, so combining it with a distillery visit makes sense. The Coastal Zone isn't a destination in itself, but as a free primer on what makes this corner of the coast special, it's worth the 20 minutes.
