Coed Bettws

The walk up Coed Bettws, just inland from Abergele, delivers one of those rewards that makes a decent afternoon hike feel worthwhile. You're climbing through proper woodland - oak and birch mostly - with a decent path that gets steeper as you go. The summit itself isn't dramatic, but the views across Conwy and towards Snowdonia do justify the leg work, especially on clear days when you can see for miles.

This is walkers' territory, really. Not technical climbing, just an honest hill walk that takes a couple of hours including stops. Families with kids who are past the "carry me" stage will manage fine, though the last bit gets a touch steep. Birdwatchers and tree enthusiasts often swing by too - the woodland itself is as much the point as the peak.

Free to access, naturally. Allow two to three hours return depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. Best in spring when the woodland is green, or autumn if you want fewer midges.

If you're staying at The Beach Caravan Park or Bron-y-Wendon Holiday Park nearby, this makes an easy morning sortie before lunch. It's close enough that you won't spend the whole day getting there and back, yet far enough into the hills to feel like proper countryside. Perfectly decent as part of a broader North Wales walking trip - you could string together a few peaks around here without driving too far between them.
