Gwyrch Castle Northern Towers

The Northern Towers at Gwyrch Castle rise up from the Welsh hillside like something from a Gothic novel, all crenellations and crumbling stone. What you're actually looking at is Victorian Gothic revival architecture at its most theatrical - built in the 1820s as part of a grand estate overlooking the North Wales coast near Abergele. The towers themselves are the main draw: substantial, imposing structures that dominate the landscape and offer proper views down towards the coast if you can access them.

Walkers will find the approach worthwhile, though it's bit of a scramble uphill through overgrown grounds. The castle itself has been through the wringer - abandoned, vandalized, partially ruined - so managing expectations helps. You're not getting a fully restored stately home experience here. What you get instead is the raw bones of something grand, the kind of place that rewards exploring if you don't mind rough terrain and uncertain access.

Histor buffs and photographers will get more out of this than families with small children. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, and climbing the towers isn't always possible depending on structural safety. Admission details are hazy, so ring ahead or check locally in Abergele before making the trip. Allow a couple of hours if you're walking up from The Beach Caravan Park - it's barely ten minutes away - or Bron-y-Wendon if you're staying there. Best visited on a clear day when the views actually justify the effort. On a grey afternoon, it's atmospheric but bleak.
