Pen Y Corddyn Mawr

The walk up Pen Y Corddyn Mawr rewards you with proper panoramic views across the North Wales coast and inland towards Snowdonia. It's a genuine hillwalking experience rather than a casual stroll - you're looking at a decent climb with some steep sections, but nothing that requires scrambling gear or serious mountaineering experience.

From the summit you get unobstructed sight lines to Conwy and across the Conwy Valley, and on a clear day the views stretch far enough to make the effort worthwhile. The peak sits at around 600 metres, so it's substantial without being Alpine. The terrain is moorland and grassland, and the walk is straightforward enough if you follow the main paths - though local knowledge helps, so checking maps beforehand saves fumbling about.

This is one for walkers rather than families with young children. The ascent takes a couple of hours round trip depending on your fitness level and starting point. There's no café or facilities at the summit, so bring water and something to eat. Spring through to early autumn is best - winter can bring fog that obscures everything you've climbed for.

If you're staying at The Beach Caravan Park or Bron-y-Wendon Holiday Park near Abergele, Pen Y Corddyn Mawr makes a cracking day out and fits well between beach days. It's close enough for a half-day excursion but challenging enough to feel like proper walking. The combination of coastal access and hill walking makes the area worth a longer visit.
