Collingwood's Hill Plantation

Dense woodland that rises abruptly from the Lincolnshire flatlands - Collingwood's Hill Plantation is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's proper forest, with mature trees creating a dark canopy overhead and narrow paths threading through bracken and undergrowth. The Wolds landscape here feels altogether different from the exposed chalk hills nearby, and that's precisely why it works.

Walkers get the most from it. The plantation sits within easy reach of Market Rasen, making it a natural detour if you're exploring the Lincolnshire Wolds National Landscape trails. There's a genuine sense of remoteness despite being tucked into commutable distance from town - bird watchers especially should give it proper attention. The paths aren't manicured or way-marked to death, so come prepared for muddy boots and a bit of navigation. Families with younger children might find it a touch claustrophobic after half an hour; older kids who like the idea of a proper woodland adventure will be in their element.

No facilities that I'm aware of, and I'd check locally whether there are any access restrictions. Best visited in autumn when the floor is carpeted in leaves, or spring when the undergrowth is less thick. If you're based at Into the Wild Glamping or Lindsey Trail just down the road, this is an easy morning's walk rather than a destination in itself. Not a showstopper, but a genuine breath of woodsmoke and soil if you're keen on old-growth forest.
