Cowdyke Plantation

Walk into Cowdyke Plantation and you're immediately wrapped in proper woodland - the kind with tall conifers that cut out the sky and make you feel properly away from it all, even though Market Rasen is just down the road. It's a straightforward forest walk rather than a fancy visitor attraction, which means no gift shop, no café, just trees and paths and the occasional birdsong that actually means something.

The plantation itself is fairly intimate - you won't need half a day here, more like an hour or so of wandering depending on which routes you fancy. Walkers will get the most out of it; there are enough tracks to make it feel like a proper ramble rather than a quick stroll round the car park. Kids can burn off energy without the twee factor of some managed nature reserves, and if you're the sort who just wants to breathe forest air without dodging too many other people, this delivers.

Timing-wise, spring's lovely when the woodland floor starts waking up, though honestly any season works. Being free (which it is) makes it an easy add-on to a park stay at one of the nearby sites - Station Farm Caravan and Camping Site or Lindsey Trail Touring Park are both close enough for a morning visit without overcomplicating things. The Lincolnshire Wolds National Landscape proper is worth exploring too if you're staying in the area for longer.

Don't expect manicured trails or interpretation boards. What you get is a wood that feels like an actual wood - and that's precisely the point.
