Combe St Nicholas Football Club

A small nature reserve tucked away near Chard that punches above its weight for wildlife spotting. The club grounds here have been managed to encourage everything from birds to butterflies, and it's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think - no crowds, no fuss, just proper countryside quiet.

Walkers will find it worthwhile if you're already in the area, though it's not a destination on its own. The trails are gentle enough for families with younger kids, though there's not masses of infrastructure - bring water and expect to navigate by instinct rather than signage. Early morning or dusk are best if you want to clock birds and small mammals without disturbing them. Spring through early autumn is when it really comes alive.

It works well as a leg of a bigger day out around South Somerset. Base yourself at Dimpsey Shepherd's Hut Glamping just down the road - the luxury shepherd's huts are a proper treat after a day exploring, and it's only 1.5 miles away. Holly Bush Caravan Park near Chard is cheaper if you're after something more straightforward. From either, you can potter over here for an hour or two between visits to Chard itself or other local walks.

Don't expect a visitor centre or café. This is nature reserve without the polish, which is rather the point. Free access and no faffing about - just turn up and have a look around.
