Corbridge Roman Museum

The Roman garrison at Corbridge once guarded the Stanegate road - one of those facts that makes you realise how much of Britain was shaped by soldiers and strategy. The museum sits right next to the excavated fort, which is the real draw. You're walking through two thousand years of history without the theatre of it, just the objects themselves: pottery shards, coins, carved stones. The displays are straightforward, almost understated - a refreshing change from over-explained museums.

It's a solid afternoon stop if you're interested in Roman Britain, particularly the practical side of garrison life rather than emperors and conquests. Families with younger kids might find it sparse - there's no interactive nonsense here, no climbing frames or sensory stations. But teenagers studying GCSE history will find plenty to sink their teeth into. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're thorough.

The real value is combining the museum with the fort outside. You can see the actual ramparts, the gate structures, the barrack blocks in foundation form. It clicks into place when you're standing on the ground. Newcastle upon Tyne is close enough for a day trip, but if you're basing yourself at East Farm Glamping or Springhouse Boutique Holiday Park nearby, you can visit without rushing. Spring and autumn are best - fewer crowds, better light for the excavations.
