Corbridge Roman Town Fort

The Roman fort at Corbridge sits on the banks of the Tyne, about 20 miles west of Newcastle, and it's one of those places that properly rewards a slow wander. What you're looking at is the remains of a supply depot from around 85 AD - not a massive fortress, but genuinely fascinating for anyone who likes piecing together how things actually worked.

Walk around and you'll see the stone foundations of barracks, a granary, and the commander's house. There's a small but decent museum on-site with artefacts that bring it all into focus - coins, pottery, bits of weaponry. It's the kind of site where you can stand in the courtyard and imagine what daily life looked like for soldiers posted this far north.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from it, though families with kids aged 10 and up tend to enjoy it too. Younger children might lose interest after an hour unless they're properly into Romans. Allow two to three hours if you're reading the interpretive panels and poking about properly.

Entry is paid, managed by English Heritage - check their website for current fees. Spring and early autumn are lovely times to visit, when the light hits the Tyne valley nicely and it's not rammed with school groups.

It works well alongside a park-based holiday. East Farm Glamping is less than five miles away, and Springhouse Boutique is similar distance. This part of Northumberland offers Hadrian's Wall sites all within reach, so you could easily string together a few Roman spots across a long weekend.
