Milecastle 22 (Portgate)

You're standing at what looks like a pile of stones in the Northumbrian countryside, but this is actually Milecastle 22 - one of the Roman Army's smallest outposts along Hadrian's Wall. It's the sort of place that rewards a bit of effort to find, tucked away near Portgate rather than obvious to casual passersby.

What you get here is the skeleton of a Roman fortlet, essentially a mini garrison for about 30 soldiers tasked with watching over a mile of the Wall. The remains are substantial enough - you can make out the foundations, the gateway, and get a real sense of how cramped these things actually were. It's properly atmospheric, especially on a grey afternoon when you've got the wind whipping across the Northumberland hills.

This works best for history buffs and serious walkers rather than families seeking instant entertainment. You'll need to know what you're looking at to get the most from it, though the nearby Wall provides the context. Plan 45 minutes if you're leisurely about it. Free access, obviously - it's open ground.

If you're based at Northumberland Nook or East Farm Glamping nearby, it makes a decent half-day loop combined with other milecastles and sections of the Wall itself. The countryside walk to reach it is actually the draw for many visitors. Worth the detour if you're already exploring the Wall; less so if it's your sole stop.
