Riding Mill Stepping Stones

The River Tyne's stone crossing at Riding Mill is one of those spots that looks deceptively simple until you're actually stood there trying not to slip. A chain of flat rocks stretches across the water, worn smooth by centuries of walkers and, well, horses - hence the name. It's genuinely useful if you're doing a longer walk along the river, but it's also the sort of place people visit just to say they've done it.

The stepping stones work best in summer when the water's low and predictable. Winter or after heavy rain? You'll want to find another way across. There's something quite satisfying about the hop-skip-jump of it all, and kids tend to find it properly exciting - though keep a close eye on younger ones, the rocks can be slippery. Most people allow twenty minutes to get across comfortably, less if you're nimble.

Geographically, you're looking at a decent drive from Newcastle upon Tyne to get here, but it slots nicely into a riverside walk in the Northumberland valleys. If you're based at Valley View Camping or Springhouse Boutique Holiday Park, both within five miles, you could make this part of a longer day out exploring the Tyne Valley. It's free, obviously, since it's just a river crossing - there's no formal visitor infrastructure, which is part of its charm. Don't come expecting a grand attraction or facilities. Come for the walk, the water, and the small satisfaction of getting across without getting soaked.
