Corbridge Roman Town - Hadrian's Wall

The Roman fort at Corbridge sits just off the main road between Newcastle and Carlisle, and what strikes you first is how ordinary the landscape looks - then you realise you're standing on two thousand years of history. This wasn't some remote outpost. It was a proper supply depot, bristling with soldiers and traders, right on what became Hadrian's Wall.

Walking the site itself takes a decent hour if you're actually reading the information boards rather than just wandering through. The stone foundations are still there - you can trace the granaries, the commander's house, the bathhouse. There's a small museum on-site that holds some cracking finds: pottery, coins, carved stones that tell you these soldiers had families, played games, worried about their futures just like anyone else.

History buffs will spend a good two hours here without flagging. Families with younger kids might find forty minutes enough before the novelty wears thin. Walkers often link this with the broader Hadrian's Wall path - it's perfectly positioned for that.

The nearest town is Newcastle, but honestly you don't need to base yourself there. East Farm Glamping is only four miles away and gives you that countryside feel without sacrificing comfort. Springhouse Boutique is slightly further but both work well for exploring this stretch of the wall without the fuss of city centre parking.

Free to wander the grounds. The museum charges a modest fee - well worth paying if you want context rather than just looking at old stones.
