Corehead & Devil's Beef Tub

The Devil's Beef Tub is exactly what its name suggests - a dramatic, almost supernatural hollow in the hills just north of Moffat. It's a natural amphitheatre carved into the moorland, steep-sided and deeply unsettling in the best way possible. The story goes that cattle rustlers used to hide stolen livestock down there, though standing at the rim you'd struggle to see how anything - bovine or otherwise - stayed hidden for long. The walk up takes about twenty minutes from the car park, and you gain proper height quickly. Not difficult, but the wind can catch you off guard on the exposed sections.

This is walker territory, primarily. History buffs might enjoy the rustling tales and the fact that it's genuinely old ground, but you're not getting interpretive panels or visitor facilities here. Kids who can manage a moderate hill will find it genuinely thrilling - there's something about the scale of the thing that gets to you. The views across Dumfries and Galloway from the top are worth the effort alone. Free to visit, and it works brilliantly as part of a wider day out around Moffat. If you're camping at Riverside Holiday Park or Howslack Farm just down the road, you could knock this out mid-morning and still have the afternoon elsewhere. Go when the weather's clear - on a murky day it's atmospheric but less rewarding visually. Allow an hour for the walk and standing about.
