Cothercott Hill

From the summit, you can see right across to the Welsh hills on a clear day - and that's about the only reason to tackle this modest rise in the Shropshire countryside. Cothercott Hill won't trouble any serious fell walkers, but it does offer a decent leg-stretch for families based at one of the nearby holiday parks around Shrewsbury.

The walk up takes about 20 minutes from the closest parking spot, following well-worn paths through farmland. Nothing too strenuous, though the final approach gets a bit steep. Kids will manage it fine, and dogs love the open ground up top.

Honestly, it's more of a gentle afternoon ramble than a proper hiking destination. The views are pleasant enough - rolling Shropshire fields stretching towards Wales - but you've probably seen better from your car window on the way here. Still, if you're staying at one of the holiday parks like Stoney Acres or Spring Lea and fancy a quick walk after breakfast, it'll do the job nicely.

Best visited when the weather's been dry for a few days. The paths can get properly muddy after rain, and there's nothing worse than squelching up a small hill in wellies only to find the summit shrouded in mist. Allow an hour there and back, including time for a sandwich at the top.
