Shooting Box

On a clear day from this 448-metre summit, you can see across three counties and spot the Welsh hills on the horizon. Shooting Box stands as one of Shropshire's more accessible peaks, offering proper fell-walking rewards without the technical scrambling that puts off many families.

The name comes from the old grouse shooting lodge that once crowned the hill - though only foundations remain now. What you get instead is a satisfying climb through mixed woodland before emerging onto open moorland for the final push to the top. Takes about an hour and a half from the nearest parking, depending on your pace.

Walkers will love the varied terrain and the sense of proper wilderness so close to Shrewsbury. Families with older children (say 8+) should manage fine, though the boggy sections after rain can be a proper test of waterproof boots. The views justify every muddy step - on a good day you'll pick out the Wrekin to the east and Cadair Idris away to the west.

Free to roam as it's open access land, though parking can be limited. Early morning or late afternoon visits avoid the weekend crowds and catch the best light. Several holiday parks within striking distance make this a cracking addition to a Shropshire break - Mountain Edge is closest at under four miles if you fancy proper comfort after your hill day.
