Cotswold Water Park

One hundred and fifty lakes spread across the Cotswold Water Park like someone's knocked over a giant's board game. Seriously - it's vast, and most people stumble into it without quite realising how big the place actually is. You're looking at a proper nature reserve just south of Cirencester, where flooded gravel pits have turned into something genuinely worthwhile for wildlife and visitors alike.

The appeal depends entirely on what you're after. Birdwatchers will spend all day here - the lakes are heaven for spotting kingfishers, herons, and grebes. Walkers can string together routes of varying length without much fuss. Families with young kids do fine for an hour or so, though it's not the kind of place where there's a visitor centre shoving activity packs at you. That's actually its strength. There are footpaths threading through, and you can rent canoes or kayaks if you fancy getting on the water itself, which transforms the whole experience.

Free to wander, though parking can be tight at popular spots. Spring and early autumn are when the place really sings - fewer visitors, better light, and the birds are actually doing something interesting. Summer gets rammed. If you're staying at one of the holiday parks nearby - Hoburne Cotswold is the closest at just over a mile - this is the obvious spot for a morning out. Don't expect manicured gardens or facilities. Expect mud, marshland, and the genuine article.
