Lake 26 sits just outside Cirencester, a proper working gravel pit that's been allowed to flood and, over the years, has turned into something genuinely worth a visit if you're camping nearby. The water's clear enough on a decent day, and it's the kind of place where you'll see proper wildlife - cormorants diving, the odd heron standing dead still at the margins, dragonflies in summer. There's a walking path round most of it, though don't expect a manicured circuit; it's more naturalistic than that, which honestly is its appeal.

Walkers and birdwatchers will find their time well spent here. Families with restless kids might find it a bit thin if they're after a full day's entertainment - an hour or so round the lake is about right unless you're genuinely into spotting species. Fishing is a draw for some; check locally whether permits are needed. The real gift is its proximity to Hoburne Cotswold Holiday Park, barely half a mile away, making it an ideal morning stroll or evening potter from your pitch without needing to drive anywhere.

Go early if you can. Midday sun hammers down and the car park area gets a bit grim. The water's cold year-round, so don't fancy an impromptu dip. Autumn's probably the best time - the light's softer, the crowds thin out, and migration season means better birdwatching. Free access and no faffing about with admission fees makes it a natural addition to any Cotswolds holiday base.
