Lake 18

Lake 18 sits just outside Cirencester, a proper working gravel pit that's been transformed into a fishing and water sports destination. It's the sort of place where locals know it well but most visitors driving through the Cotswolds miss entirely. The water is clear enough for decent fishing - pike and carp mainly - and you'll see anglers set up along the banks most weekends. Watersports happen here too, though it's low-key compared to the busier lakes you'll find further afield.

Families with young kids might find it a bit limited - there's no café, no play area, and honestly it's not the kind of place you'd spend a full day unless you're fishing or seriously into water activities. Walkers and cyclists get more from the surrounding area than the lake itself. If you're based at Hoburne Cotswold just half a mile away, you might pop over for a wander and a look, but it's not a destination in its own right.

The real appeal is peace and quiet. No crowds, no entrance fees, no car parks charging a fiver. You can walk the perimeter on a morning, watch the light change on the water, and hear yourself think. That matters if you're after respite from the Cotswolds' prettier but busier attractions. Nearby Cirencester offers shops and proper restaurants when you want civilisation again. In summer the banks get overgrown, so spring and autumn are better for a visit.
