Lake 19

Lake 19 sits just outside Cirencester, a proper working gravel pit that's morphed into something rather unexpected - a decent spot for a quiet afternoon if you know what you're after. The water is clear enough, the banks are manageable, and there's a genuine sense of being away from the main drag despite being barely a mile from the town centre.

It's a working site, so don't expect manicured paths or facilities. What you get instead is that raw, slightly industrial charm of Gloucestershire's mineral extraction heritage. Walkers tend to loop around it, and if you've got binoculars, the birdwatching can be decent depending on season. Fishermen absolutely know about this place - it's been stocked with carp and pike, so you'll see them along the banks with their kit at weekends.

Families with older kids who don't need constant entertainment will find it peaceful rather than inspiring. There's no playground, no café, no visitor centre. You come here to breathe and watch the water. Allow 45 minutes to an hour for a decent circuit, longer if you're genuinely birdwatching or sitting still.

Staying at Hoburne Cotswold Holiday Park, just 0.4 miles away, gives you easy access without committing your whole day to it. It works best as a morning walk before heading into Cirencester itself for lunch, or an evening stroll when you want something low-key. Worth popping by if you're in the area, but don't rearrange your itinerary especially for it.
