Creag Rèidh Raineach

The walk up Creag Rèidh Raineach is straightforward enough, though 'straightforward' in the Highlands always comes with caveats. Starting from near Kyle, you're looking at a modest hill by Scottish standards - nothing that'll leave you gasping like Ben Nevis, but the views across to Skye make the effort worthwhile. The Gaelic name means something like "smooth hill of bracken," which is fairly accurate. You get heather, rock, and that particular Highland light that makes everything look properly dramatic even when the weather's being cooperative.

It's ideal for walkers who want something achievable without a pre-dawn start or technical scrambling. Families with older kids won't struggle, though younger ones might find the bracken tedious in places. Allow two to three hours for a round trip and bring decent boots - the ground's boggy in patches. Best tackled when the midges aren't at their absolute worst, which rules out July and August unless you're tolerating a bit of suffering for the views.

If you're based at Glenshiel Campsite or Reraig, both within five miles, this makes a solid morning or afternoon outing. Neither is a legendary summit, but that's rather the point - you'll likely have the hillside to yourself, which beats elbowing through crowds at a more famous peak. The walk works well alongside a broader exploration of the Kyle area and the Skye approach roads.
