Loch Gorm Mòr

The water here is dark and serious, stretching out between steep hillsides that rise without fanfare from the shore. Loch Gorm Mòr sits inland from Kyle, a proper Highland loch that doesn't announce itself with car parks or visitor facilities - you come across it and it's either your thing or it isn't.

There's no developed access that I could track down, which means you're picking your way to the water's edge on foot, likely through rough ground. The scale of it catches you off guard. The mountains aren't dramatic peaks, but they're solid and close enough that you feel hemmed in, in the best way. In decent light the reflection is striking. Come when the weather's kind - this isn't a place that rewards a visit in driving rain.

This suits walkers more than casual visitors. Families might manage it if the kids are into scrambling about, but there's no track, no facilities, no shelter. The nearest town is Kyle, which isn't far, but feels a world away once you're here. If you're camping at Reraig Caravan & Camping Skye just down the way, it's worth a morning ramble - close enough to do without eating the day, wild enough to feel like you've gone somewhere.

Allow a couple of hours to get there, have a poke around, and get back. Go in spring or early autumn when the light's best. It won't be in anyone's top ten Highland lochs, but that's precisely why it's worth seeking out.
