Crickhowell Resource & Information Centre

The Resource & Information Centre sits bang in the middle of Crickhowell, a proper little market town in Powys that punches above its weight. It's the sort of place where you pop in for ten minutes and end up chatting to a local about the best walks for another hour. The staff actually know the area - not just the tourist board script - and they'll point you towards things you'd never find on your own.

It's mostly useful if you're staying in the region and need to get your bearings. Maps, trail guides, accommodation lists, the usual kit. They've got intel on the Brecon Beacons, which dominate the landscape here, and can advise on circular walks that don't just trudge uphill and stop. The centre itself won't hold you long, but it's free and it saves you wandering around trying to find things.

Families stopping by on the way to somewhere else find it handy. Walkers should definitely call in before heading out - the local knowledge saves time and bad route choices. History types might pick up information about the town's castle and bridge, both worth a look while you're here.

If you're based at Cwmdu Campsite nearby, this is your first stop. It's walking distance from the town centre, open most days, and costs nothing. Allow twenty minutes unless you get cornered by enthusiastic volunteers. Summer's the obvious time, but the staff are equally helpful in winter when fewer people venture out.
