Twyn Du

The walk up Twyn Du rewards you with genuine views across the Black Mountains rather than the sort of thing that looks better in the brochure. It's a modest peak by serious hillwalker standards - nothing that'll test your legs for hours - but it sits in proper walking country just outside Crickhowell, and on a clear day you can see right across to the Brecon Beacons.

You're looking at a straightforward fell walk of around two hours return, depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath. The path is clear enough, though muddy patches aren't uncommon even days after rain. Families with older kids will manage it fine. Little ones under eight might find it a slog, unless they're already used to hills.

It's not a destination attraction where you'll lose half a day. What it is, though, is a proper addition to a walking holiday in the area. You could easily pair it with the nearby campsite options - Olchon Valley and Kaya at Blackhill Farm both rate exceptionally - and combine it with other walks or pubs in Crickhowell itself. Cwmdu Campsite sits even closer if you want something lower-key.

Go in the morning if you can. The light's better, the paths less waterlogged, and you'll avoid the afternoon walkers. Free to walk, naturally. No facilities at the summit - bring water and something to eat if you plan to stay up there a while.
