Croes Caeriw

Three massive stone slabs stand in a rough circle in a field just outside Tenby, marking what archaeologists believe was once a Bronze Age burial chamber. The capstone has long since fallen, but these weathered uprights still command respect after roughly 4,000 years.

History buffs will find plenty to ponder here. The site represents one of Pembrokeshire's lesser-known prehistoric monuments, far quieter than the famous Pentre Ifan further north. You can walk right up to the stones and touch them - there's no rope barrier or entrance fee that I'm aware of.

Families might struggle to hold younger children's attention for more than ten minutes, though. It's essentially three big rocks in a field, and while the historical significance is fascinating, there's not much visual drama left. The setting is pleasant enough, with rolling countryside stretching toward the coast.

Getting there requires a bit of detective work as signage is minimal. Park considerately on the roadside and walk across the field - takes about five minutes from the road. Allow half an hour unless you're particularly keen on prehistoric sites.

Perfectly positioned for a quick stop if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Cross Park Holiday Village or Masterland Farm. Combine it with a proper day out in Tenby itself, where the medieval walls and harbour beaches offer considerably more entertainment value for the family pound.
