Crow Hill

The walk up Crow Hill from Castle Douglas takes you straight into proper Lowland countryside - rolling farmland that opens up the further you climb. It's not a slog either, more of a steady pull that rewards you with views over Loch Ken and the surrounding hills once you reach the top. The peak itself is unremarkable in the way many Scottish low hills are, but that's rather the point.

This is a walk for people who like their exercise straightforward without the drama. Families with confident walkers will manage it fine in under two hours return, and it pairs nicely with a stay at Loch Ken Holiday Park just down the road - you can knock it out in the morning and still have the afternoon for the loch itself. The Galloway Glamping crowd might find it a bit tame, but it's decent enough leg-stretching if you're based further out.

Winter's probably best avoided; the ground gets boggy and the views disappear into cloud. Spring through autumn works well, though midges can be savage in July and August if the weather turns still and damp. Castle Douglas itself has a few pubs and cafes worth knowing about before or after - grab a coffee and work out your next move.

It won't blow your mind, but it's a solid morning out if you're staying in the area and need to get away from the caravans for a bit.
