Deepdale Nature Reserve

The Tees Valley has proper wildlife watching if you know where to look, and Deepdale Nature Reserve does the job without the crowds. It's a working landscape rather than a manicured visitor attraction - open grassland, woodland edges, and the sort of habitat that actually supports birds and small mammals rather than just looking nice for photos.

You're looking at a few hours' rambling around here depending on how seriously you take the birdwatching. Spring and early summer are best for spotting nesting birds; winter brings visiting species down from the north. Pecknell Farm and the Barnard Castle Camping and Caravanning Club Site are both within easy reach too. Free access and no faffing about with opening hours makes it flexible enough to fit around everything else you're doing in Teesdale.
