Deer Leap Standing Stones

Two weathered stones stand sentinel on a grassy slope, remnants of what archaeologists believe was once a stone circle or ceremonial site. Deer Leap Standing Stones might not compete with Stonehenge for drama, but there's something rather moving about these forgotten guardians overlooking the Somerset countryside near Wells.

The stones themselves are modest - you'll be done in fifteen minutes unless you're the sort who likes to sit quietly and ponder ancient mysteries. History enthusiasts will appreciate the Bronze Age connections, though frankly there's precious little interpretation on site. Bring your imagination.

Families with young children might find it a bit underwhelming after the initial excitement of "look, standing stones!" wears off. But it makes a decent leg-stretcher if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Wells Touring Park or Bucklegrove Holiday Park. The walk up from the road is gentle enough for most ages.

Best combined with a trip into Wells itself - the cathedral is properly spectacular and worth the short drive. The stones work well as part of a broader exploration of Somerset's ancient sites, though don't expect crowds or facilities. Sometimes the quiet, overlooked spots are the most atmospheric.
