Waterwheel Swallet

Standing at the edge of this limestone cave entrance near Wells, you're looking at one of Somerset's more challenging underground adventures. Waterwheel Swallet drops away into the Mendip Hills' extensive cave system, and it's definitely not one for casual tourists with their Sunday walking boots.

Serious cavers and potholers will find this a proper test of their skills. The descent requires ropes, helmets, and a good dose of confidence - this isn't the sort of place you pop into for a quick look around. Local caving clubs know it well, and for good reason. The limestone formations are spectacular once you're down there, but getting there is half the challenge.

Families staying at nearby sites like Cheddar Camping or Strawberryfield Park should probably stick to the more accessible Cheddar Gorge caves instead. This one's for the adventurous types who've got proper kit and experience. Even then, you'll want to check conditions and go with someone who knows the system.

It's the kind of place that reminds you why the Mendips have such a reputation among the caving community. Worth the effort if you're properly equipped, but definitely not a casual day out.
