Dinerth Castle

Stone foundations scattered across a windswept hillside are all that remain of this Norman stronghold, built around 1110 to control the Aeron valley. The ruins sit on private farmland near Lampeter, offering glimpses into medieval Wales through weathered masonry and earthwork defences that once protected this strategic outpost.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the castle's role in the Norman conquest of west Wales, though there's precious little left standing to fire the imagination. What survives are low walls, foundation stones, and the raised motte where the original wooden keep would have stood. The site lacks interpretation boards, so brush up on your medieval history beforehand.

Getting there requires crossing private land - always check with the landowner first. The walk takes about twenty minutes from the nearest road, and you'll need proper walking boots as the ground can be boggy. Don't expect grand castle walls or dramatic ruins; this is very much an archaeological site rather than a tourist attraction.

Families staying at nearby Wide Horizons or Woodlands holiday parks might find older children with a genuine interest in history enjoy the short expedition, but younger ones will likely find it a bit dull. Combine it with a trip into Lampeter for supplies, and perhaps save it for a day when the weather's too poor for the beach.
