Dorstone Hill

Standing at 514 metres, this unassuming peak west of Hereford offers proper hill walking without the crowds you'll find on more famous summits. The climb isn't too taxing - about an hour's steady walk from the village of Dorstone below - but the views across the Golden Valley and towards the Black Mountains make it well worth the effort.

Serious walkers will appreciate the ridge walk along Merbach Hill that connects to Dorstone Hill, though families with younger children might find the terrain a bit challenging. The paths can get muddy after rain, so decent boots are essential. From the top, you can see all the way to Hay-on-Wye on a clear day, with the River Wye snaking through the valley below.

What makes this hill special is its position on the Welsh border - you're literally walking between England and Wales as you follow some of the ridge paths. History buffs will enjoy spotting the ancient earthworks and burial mounds scattered across the summit area. It's free to access and always open, though parking in Dorstone village is limited.

If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Poston Mill or Chapel House Farm, it makes for a cracking half-day out. Just don't expect facilities at the top - bring water and snacks, and check the weather before you set off.
